Somewhere between the first pocket calculator and the smartphone in your hand, an entire toolkit of quick mental math tricks quietly went extinct. Your grandparents could split a restaurant bill, size up a discount, and sanity-check a shop receipt while the change was still being counted. Most of us now unlock a phone, open an app, and type, which takes longer than the calculation itself and, worse, switches our own judgment off entirely.

The good news is that the old toolkit is small, learnable in an afternoon, and built from about a dozen moves that combine like Lego. The 10 percent anchor

Almost every everyday percentage question surrenders to one move: find 10 percent by shifting the decimal one place left, then scale. On a 240 restaurant bill, 10 percent is 24. Want 15 percent? Add half of that: 24 plus 12 is 36. Want 20 percent? Double it: 48. The same anchor works downward with 1 percent, shifting the decimal two places. What is 3 percent of 3,600? One percent is 36, so 3 percent is 108. Once the anchors feel automatic, awkward numbers stop being awkward: 18 percent of 250 is 10 percent (25) plus 5 percent (12.5) plus 3 percent (7.5), which is 45.

Flip percentages when they look ugly

Here is the trick that reliably surprises people: X percent of Y always equals Y percent of X, because both are just X times Y divided by 100. So 8 percent of 50, which feels like work, flips into 50 percent of 8, which is obviously 4. And 16 percent of 25 becomes 25 percent of 16, a quarter of 16, which is 4 again. Whenever a percentage problem looks hostile, flip it and check whether the friendly version appears. About half the time it does.

Doubling and halving

Multiplication keeps its value when you halve one factor and double the other, and that single fact dissolves most hard-looking products. Take 16 x 25: halve and double once to get 8 x 50, then again to get 4 x 100, which is 400. Multiplying by 5 is just multiplying by 10 and halving: 5 x 86 is 860 halved, 430. Multiplying by 25 is multiplying by 100 and quartering. These are not party tricks, they are the standard route: turn the problem into tens and hundreds, where your brain is already fluent.

Nines, elevens, and squares ending in five

Three classics deserve their own shelf. To multiply by 9, multiply by 10 and subtract the original: 9 x 47 is 470 minus 47, which is 423. To multiply a two-digit number by 11, write the sum of its digits between them: 34 x 11 puts 3 plus 4 between the 3 and the 4, giving 374. When the digit sum passes 9, carry: 67 x 11 gives 6, then 13, then 7, which resolves to 737. And to square any number ending in 5, multiply the leading part by one more than itself and append 25: 35 squared is 3 x 4 followed by 25, which is 1,225, and 65 squared is 6 x 7 followed by 25, which is 4,225.

The rule of 72

For money questions, one shortcut earns its keep above all others. Divide 72 by a yearly growth rate and you get the approximate number of years for the amount to double. Growth of 6 percent a year doubles money in about 12 years, since 72 divided by 6 is 12, and the precise answer is 11.9. At 8 percent, about 9 years. It works in reverse for inflation, telling you how quickly prices double and your cash halves in buying power. Conversions that are close enough

Travel math rarely needs decimals, it needs speed. Kilograms to pounds: double it and add 10 percent, so 70 kg becomes 140 plus 14, about 154 lb, and the exact figure is 154.3. Kilometers to miles: multiply by 0.6 for a quick read, so 100 km is about 62 miles in reality and your estimate of 60 is close enough to choose a lane. Celsius to Fahrenheit: double and add 30, so 20 degrees becomes about 70 against a true 68. Centimeters to inches: divide by 2.5 and shave a little, since the true divisor is 2.54. Each rule trades a sliver of accuracy for an answer you can produce mid-conversation.
